From nutrition to yoga, this is a very practical system that gives us women useful advice on how to maintain hormonal balance and take good care of our bodies at all stages of our lives. Especially as we journey towards menopause, Ayurveda is there to support us with its millenary wisdom. These are some easy routines to incorporate for the daily care of the vulva and vagina, our most delicate flower.
Sesame oil: our best allied against dryness, it cannot be missing in our diet. We find it at the organic market, just make sure it is not from roasted seeds. And not only for eating… in Ayurveda sesame oil is used locally to moisturize and tone the vaginal tissue, by inserting a small amount (0.15 oz) of organic oil inside the vagina with a very small syringe, and then softly introducing a finger to perform a delicate massage until the oil has been well absorbed. This is very effective and without any side effects, a very natural and inexpensive way to keep the area toned, and a safe alternative to the commercial creams and lotions that usually contain hormones and chemicals. In India, this technique is called Yoni Abhyanga and it is prescribed to women after childbirth, and if there is a prolapse and dryness to regain tone and elasticity.
Lavender essential oil: anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, 2-3 drops diluted in water are enough for the daily hygiene. We can also blend them with fresh organic yogurt and use as an intimate cleanser.
Probiotics: a must in our diet, from freshly made organic yogurt or other fermented products such as miso paste or sauerkraut. We can also find them at the organic market as a dietary supplement, in the form of capsules that we can also insert into the vagina when we suspect of a small infection or candidiasis.
Purified butter, or ghee, has been used in India since ancient times for its medicinal properties, and in rituals.
This is the essence of butter once all the impurities of the milk have been eliminated through slow cooking. It is not necessary to store it in the fridge, and as it ages it also increases its healing powers.
Because of the cooking process, ghee becomes one of the most sattvic (intelligent) foods that we can have. It has the quality of penetrating deeply into the tissues to transport medicinal substances. It promotes intelligence, lubricates the connective tissues and promotes the digestion and assimilation of food.
Especially indicated to reduce Pitta imbalances, all other constitutions can benefit from its consumption.
Externally, it can be used to soothe and nurture the skin, heal burns and irritations… and in oil lamps, because when we inhale it our prana or life force increases, and our intellect as well.

In Ayurveda, freshly made yogurt is a very satvic (intelligent) food. Unlike old yogurt, it is not fattening and very easy to digest. It alkalises and hydrates the digestive system, has diuretic properties, and it is full of calcium and probiotic healthy bacteria.
Yogurt is also cooling so it is best to avoided after sunset, and should only be mixed with fruits for cosmetic external use.
Ingredients: milk (from one cup to one quart) and one tablespoon of the freshest organic yogurt available to be used as a starter
How to make the yogurt: bring the milk to boil and then let it simmer for a few minutes. Turn off the fire and let the milk cool down to about 115 degrees ( a bit above body temperature) At that point, add the starter yogurt and let it incubate for about 8 hours. Most ovens have always the pilot light on so just by leaving the mixture there you will have fresh yogurt in a few hours. You can also use a heating pad, a yogurt maker… it is important to not disturb the yogurt as it sets
